Deb bought a pair of shoes for $60 and 6 pairs of socks. The total before tax was $78. How much did the socks cost?

    Let x be the price for one pair of socks:

    60 + 6x = 78

    60 + 6x - 78 = 78 - 78

    6x-18 = 0

    6x = 18 and x = $3 (cost of 1 pair) and for the 6 pairs he paid $18
