When you see a coefficient (the number next to the letter) next to a variable (the letter), you multiply. So 3*2=6 So you have: 6+y, or since y=-1, 6 + (-) 1 = 5

    3 (2) + - 1

    6-1=5

6-1 is from the 1 being a negative already.
