Use the "complete the square" method to rewrite the equation ax 2 + bx + c = 0 in the form (x - p) 2 = q.

    X^2 + (b/a) x + c/a = 0

    x^2 + (b/a) x + c/a = 0

    x^2 + 2 (b/a) x + c/a - b/a = 0

    x^2 + 2 (b/a) x = b/a - c/a

    x^2 + 2 (b/a) x + (b/a) ^2 = b/a - c/a + (b/a) ^2

    (x + b/a) ^2 = b/a - c/a + (b/a) ^2

    p = - b/a

    q = b/a - c/a + (b/a) ^2
