The scale on the map is 2cm : 185mi. If two cities are 3.86 cm away on the map how many miles away are they?

So you put it into a proportion 2cm/185 is equal to 3.86 cm / x and multiply 2 times x and get 2x and mulitply 185 and 3.86 which equals 714.1. the you write out 2x = 714.1 and divide each of the number by two so x is standing alone, and get x = 357.05 miles away.
