The odd numbers can be given by:

    2n - 1 Assuming n is starting at 1.

3 is the second odd number

    2 (2) - 1 = 4 - 1 = 3

If we wish to start at at 3 then we only need to add 1 to the n:

    2 (n+1) - 1 = 2n + 1.

    And hence our expression.
