Why can we subtract exponents when we are dividing two things with the same base?

    (1 * 10^5) / (5 * 10^3) is going to subtract to be 2 * 10 and equal 20. It is the same as multiplying it all out, which would be 100,000 / 5,000 and still equal 20.
