    You must get x by itself on one side of the equal sign therefore start by subtracting 20 from both sides of the equation the divide. 5 from both sides of the equation.

    20 +.5x - 20 = 37 - 20

    .5x = 17

    .5x/.5 = 17/.5

    x = 34
