    (x+1) (x-3) = 0

    (x+1) = 0, (x-3) = 0

    x=-1, x=3 are the roots of the equation

    so, the sum the roots of the equation: - 1+3=2

    then the product of the roots of the equation: - 1*3=-3

    so, 2 - (-3) = 2+3=5

    it exceeds by 5

    so the answer is (e) 5
