A program on television ran 30 minutes. The program ran seven minutes longer than three times the length of the commercials. Use the guess and check method to find the number of minutes the commercials ran during the program.

    Well if we let c represent the number of minutes the commercials ran, then 3c+7 = 30 right?

    L=length of commercials, p=program on television

    p=3l+7

    p=30

    Substitute 30 for p in first equation

    30=3l+7

    23=3l, l=7 and 2/3

    length of commercials: 7 minutes and 40 minutes.
