    So (1/2) base times height = area

    height=x+4

    base=x

    x/2 times x+4=240

    multiply both sides by 2

    x+x+4=480

    2x+4=480

    subtract 4 from both sides

    2x=476

    base=238 cm

    height=238+4=242

    Well, the formula for area if a triangle is length x height divided by two. So you work backwards using the given area of the triangle.
