One number is 4 more than another. If 3 times the smaller number is equal to twice the larger number, what is the smaller number.

    Represent the unknowns with L and S. Then 3S = 2L. L = S + 4.

    Solve this system of linear equations for S:

    3S = 2L becomes 3S = 2 (S+4), or 3S = 2S + 8. Then S=8.
