With a wooden ruler, you measure the length of a rectangular piece of sheet metal to be 12 mm. with micrometer calipers, you measure the width of the rectangle to be 5.98 mm. use the correct number of significant figures: what is (a) the area of the rectangle; (b) the ratio of the rectangle's width to its length; (c) the perimeter of the rectangle; (d) the difference between the length and the width; and (e) the ratio of the length to the width?

    A. The area of the rectangle is the product of the length and width as shown in the formula below.

    Area = Length x Width

    Substituting the known values,

    Area = (12 mm) x (5.98 mm)

    Area = 71.76 mm²

    To express the area in correct number of significant figures, we express it such that the number of significant figures is only 2.

    Area = 72 mm²

    b. ratio of the rectangle's width to its length

    ratio = (5.98 mm) / (12 mm) = 0.4983

    Since, the maximum number of significant figures is only two.

    ratio = 0.50

    c. Perimeter of the rectangle is calculated through the equation,

    Perimeter = 2L + 2W

    Perimeter = (2) (12 mm) + 2 (5.98 mm)

    Perimeter = 35.96 mm

    Since the minimum number of decimal numbers is 0, the final answer to this,

    Perimeter = 36 mm

    d. difference between the length and width,

    Difference = 12 mm - 5.98 mm

    Difference = 6.02 mm

    Difference = 6 mm

    e. the ratio of the length and the width,

    ratio = (12 mm) / (5.98 mm)

    ratio = 2.0
