    Two books cost $72.

    one book ... x

    second book ... 3 * x + $4

    $72 = x + 3 * x + $4

    72 - 4 = x + 3 * x

    68 = 4 * x / 4

    x = 68 / 4

    x = $17

    $72 - $17 = $55

    One book cost $55 and the other $17.
