8*2+1/2 and it becomes 16+1/2 which is 17/2.

8 1/2 as improper fraction is 17/2
You get that by multiplying the whole number 8 by the denominator of the fraction. That equals 16 and the 1 from the numerator of the fraction 1/2 so it looks like 16+1=17
This is your new numerator 17. Your denominator is 2 from the original fraction.
