A compressed spring has 16.2 J of elastic potential energy when it is compressed 0.30 m. What is the spring constant of the spring?

    It is equal to the work done to stretch the spring, which depends upon the spring constant k as well as the distance stretched. It is expressed as:

    PE = W = 1/2 (kx^2)

    16.2 = 1/2 (k (0.30) ^2)

    k = 360 J/m^2
