    The equation for kinetic energy is

    E = 1/2 m v^2

    Isolating for the speed gives us

    v = sqrt (2E/m),

    that is the square root of 2 times the energy divided by the mass.

    This gives us a speed of

    v = 8.5 m/s

    So the answer is C.
