    A total solar eclipse is where the moon is completely aligned between the sun and the Earth. It is much more rare.

    A partial eclipse is where the moon is in the new moon phase, but is not completely aligned between the Earth and sun. This is because the moon's orbit, relative to Earth, is tilted.
