On his fishing trip Taylor takes the boat 12 km south. The fish aren't biting so he goes 4 km west. He follows a school of fish 1 km north. What distance did he cover? What was his displacement (magnitude and direction) ?

    Distance:12+4+1=17km

    displacement (magnitude):

    (12-1) ²+4²=d²

    121+16=d²

    137=d²

    √137=d

    11.7≈d

    direction: South south west, baring of 200 degrees
