When an atom loses an electron, its atomic number increases by 1 and the mass number decreases by 1?

    No, nothing happens to the atomic number when losing or gaining an electron. Electrons are so light weight, that their mass is not accounted for when deciding molecular weight, only protons and neutrons are.
