What happens to the density of a substance when it's heated? Explain?

    For example if an iron is heated it will get longer and fatter and its density will decrease. This happens because the mass of a rod stays the same but its volume increases ... A few substances behave differently when heated or cooled. Water is one such substance

    When you heat a substance, it's atoms start shaking up faster and the substance starts expanding and the density begins to drop.
