Carson’s "Silent Spring" influenced the environmental movement as it presents a view of nature compromised by synthetic pesticides, especially DDT. The pesticides not only kill bugs but also threaten bird and fish populations, and eventually sicken children. Much of the data and case studies that Carson drew from weren’t new but she was the first to consolidate them all for the general public and to draw blunt conclusions. This book was so revolutionary that by the end of the twentieth century, it took its place on lists of the best books of the century or even of all time.
