Work is defined as the scalar product of force and displacement in the direction of the force.

Then work is not done when a force applied cause no displacement, i. e the body still remains in it's original position

Take for instance you want a push a car to start and after apply force, the car did not move away from it's position due to friction or other forces opposition your force, then you have done no work.

Carry a pot of water on ones head for 2hrs or more without leaving the position is punishment and not work.

The person has done no work.
