An object of unknown mass m is hung from a vertical spring of unknown spring constant k, and the object is observed to be at rest when the spring has stretched by 17 cm. The object is then given a slight push upward and executes SHM. Determine period t of this oscillation

    Explanation:

    Given distance x = 17cm = 0.17m

    We recall that Force F = k * x = k * 0.17m

    We recall that F = M * g = M * 9.8

    Equating both equations:

    kx = mg

    => k/m = g/x

    = 9.8/0.17 = 57.647

    We also recall that ω = √ (k/m) = 2πf = 2π/T.

    √ (k/m) = 7.593

    => T = 2π/7.593

    Period T = 0.827s
