A very elastic rubber ball is dropped from a certain height and hits the floor with a downward speed v. Since it is so elastic, the ball bounces back with the same speed v going upward. Which of the following statements about the bounce are correct? (There could be more than one correct choice.) The magnitude of the ball's momentum was the same just before and just after the bounce. The ball had the same momentum just before and just after the bounce. The ball's momentum was conserved during the bounce. None of the above statements are correct.

The magnitude of the ball's momentum was the same just before and just after the bounce.

    Explanation:

Magnitude of momentum is equal to product of mass and magnitude of velocity. This is because speed of the ball (magnitude of velocity) is the same before and after the bounce.

    b.

Ball does not have same momentum before and after the bounce as momentum is a vector quantity. Before bouncing momentum is directed downward and after bounce it is directed upward.

    c.

During the bounce ball's velocity become zero for a short interval and so momentum will also be zero.
