A man is shot out of a cannon towards the center of an 80 foot long catching net 200 feet away. Unfortunately, the person in charge of aiming the cannon did not consider the crosswind. The man fired out of the cannon is propelled at 40 miles per hour towards the center of the net. If the crosswind pushes him perpendicular to this path at 10 mph, (but parallel to the ground) will the man hit the net? If not, by how many feet will he miss?

The center of the catching net will be at a distance of 200 + 40 = 240 ft away from the canon. The man is fired towards the center at a speed of 40 miles per hour.

    40 miles = 40 x 5280 ft

    40 miles per hour = 40 x 5280 / 60 x 60 = 58.67 ft per second.

Time taken to go to center

    = distance / speed

    = 240 / 58.67

    = 4.09 s

Air is blowing at the rate of 10 miles per hour or

    58.67 / 4 = 14.67 ft / s

    Deviation due to air

    14.67 x 4.09

    = 60 ft approx.
