A bicyclist of mass 88.0 kg puts all his weight on each downward-moving pedal as he pedals up a steep road. Take the diameter of the circle in which the pedals rotate to be 0.33 m, and determine the magnitude of the maximum torque he exerts in the process.

    From the question,

    T = F*r ... Equation 1

    Where T = Torque, F = Force, r = radius of the circle.

    F = W = mg ... Equation 2

    Substitute equation 2 into equation 1

    T = mgr ... Equation 3

    Given: m = 88 kg, g = 9.8 m/s², r = 0.33/2 m

    T = 88 (9.8) (0.33) / 2

    T = 142.296 Nm.
