The Earth lies in one of the outer arms of the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky way that you see is the central portion of the galaxy that is visible. It consists of millions of stars, star clusters, dust and gas. The stars, dust and gas are part of the Milky Way only. It is a dense band. It obscures any outside view beyond the galaxy. Thus, you are not able to see any distant galaxies in the this band.
