A skater with an initial speed of 7.68 m/s stops propelling himself and begins to coast across the ice, eventually coming to rest. Air resistance is negligible. (a) The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ice and the skate blades is 0.105. Find the deceleration caused by kinetic friction.

    the deceleration cause by the kinetic friction is 1.03 m/s²

    Explanation:

    given,

    initial velocity of the skater = 7.68 m/s

    comes to rest means final velocity = 0 m/s

    deceleration cause by the kinetic friction = ?

    given kinetic friction coefficient = 0.105

    we know

    F = μ N

    F = μ m g ... (1)

    and we also know that

    F = m a ... (2)

    comparing equation (1) and (2)

    m a = - μ m g

    a = - μ g

    a = - 0.105 * 9.81

    a = - 1.03 m/s²

    now, the deceleration cause by the kinetic friction is 1.03 m/s²
