A member of the volleyball team spikes the ball. During this process, she changes the velocity of the ball from 4.3 m/s to - 25.1 m/s along a certain direction. If the impulse she delivers to the ball is - 7.3 kg · m/s, determine the mass of the volleyball in kilograms.

    According to newtons second law,

    Force (F) = mass (m) * acceleration (a)

    Where acceleration (a) = change in velocity/time (t)

    a = final velocity (v) - initial velocity (u) / time taken (t)

    Substituting this in the formula for calculating force;

    F = ma

    F = m (v-u) / t

    Ft = m (v-u) = Impulse

    Using Impulse = m (v-u)

    Given impulse = - 7.3kgm/s; v = - 25.1m/s; u = 4.3m/s m=?

    Substituting in the formula for impulse we will have;

    -7.3 = m (-25.1 - 4.3)

    -7.3 = - 29.4m

    m = - 7.3/-29.4

    m = 0.25kg

    The mass of the body is 0.25kg
