A 18.6 m long steel beam is accidentally dropped by a construction crane from a height of 8.78 m. The horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field over the region is 12.7 µT. The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s 2. What is the induced emf in the beam just before impact with the Earth, assuming its long dimension remains in a horizontal plane, oriented perpendicularly to the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field? Answer in units of mV

    Answer: Induced emf is 3.1mV

    Explanation:

    Speed, s = √ 2gh, where g is acceleration fue to gravity and h is height

    S = √ 2 x 9.8 x 8.78

    S = 13.12m/sec

    Emf = Bsl

    = 18 6 x 13.12 x 12.7 x 10^-6T

    = 3.099 x 10^-3V

    Approximately,

    3.1mV

    Therefore, the induced emf is 3.1mV
