At the maximum rate of power generation, a small hydroelectric power plant takes a discharge of 16.2 m3/s through an elevation drop of 61 m. The head loss through the intakes, penstock, and outlet works is 5.8 m. The turbine, combined with the electrical generator, is able to convert 86% of the mechanical energy into electrical energy. What is the rate of electrical power generation? The water temperature is 15℃.

    Actual rate of power generation = 7,544 KW

    Explanation:

    given,

    discharge of the hydroelectric power plant = 16.2 m³/s

    elevation drop = 61 m

    head loss through the intakes, penstock, and outlet works = 5.8 m

    net head available = 61 - 5.8 = 55.2 m

    power available

    P = Q * (ρ g H)

    P = 16.2 * (1000 * 9.81 * 55.2)

    P = 8,772 KW

    given efficiency = 86 %

    so, Actual rate of power generation = 0.86 * 8772

    Actual rate of power generation = 7,544 KW
