Calculate the specific heat of a metal. in J/kg. K, from the following data. A container made of the metal has a mass of 3.6 kg and contains 16.0 kg of water, a 1.8 kg of the metal initially at a temperature of 171.0 °C is dropped into the water. The container and the water have an initial temperature of 16.0°C and the final temperature of the entire system is 18.0°C.

    Calculate the specific heat of metal is

    c = 246.47 J / kg * K

    Explanation:

    To calculate the specific heat of a metal

    Qp = Qw + Qc

    Given

    m₁ = 3.6 kg, m₂ = 16.0 kg, m₃ = 1.8 kg

    ΔT = 18 ° C - 16 ° C = 2 ° C

    ΔTₙ = 171.0 ° C - 16 ° C = 155 ° C

    m₃ * c * ΔTₙ = m₂ * c₁ * ΔT + m₁ * c₁ * ΔT

    Solve to c'

    c = m₂ * c₁ * ΔT / m₃ * ΔTₙ - m₁ * ΔT

    c = [ 16.0 kg * 4187 (J / kg * K) ] / [ (1.8 kg * 155° C - 3.6 kg * 2° C) ]

    c = 246.47 J / kg * K
