1. A surfer moving with an initial speed of 1.5 m/s catches a wave and accelerates at a constant

rate of 2.1 m/s2 for 2.2 s.

a) How far does the surfer travel in those 2.2 seconds?

b) What's the velocity of the surfer at the end of those 2.2 seconds?

    a) Δx ≈ 8.4 m

    b) v ≈ 6.1 m/s

    Explanation:

    Given:

    v₀ = 1.5 m/s

    a = 2.1 m/s²

    t = 2.2 s

    a) Find: Δx

    Δx = v₀ t + ½ at²

    Δx = (1.5 m/s) (2.2 s) + ½ (2.1 m/s²) (2.2 s) ²

    Δx ≈ 8.4 m

    b) Find: v

    v = at + v₀

    v = (2.1 m/s²) (2.2 s) + (1.5 m/s)

    v ≈ 6.1 m/s
