What is the difference between a step-up transformer and a step-down transformer?

    The main difference between step-up and step-down transformer is that, step-up transformer increases the voltage whereas a step-down transformer decreases the voltage ... If the HV (High Voltage) winding is connected to supply main and LV (low voltage) winding to load, the transformer works as Step-down transformer.
