A ball with a mass of 275 g is dropped from rest, hits the floor and rebounds upward. If the ball hits the floor with a speed of 3.10 m/s and rebounds with a speed of 1.90 m/s, determine the following. (a) magnitude of the change in the ball's momentum in kg · m/s (Let up be in the positive direction.) kg · m/s (b) change in the magnitude of the ball's momentum in kg · m/s (Let negative values indicate a decrease in magnitude.) kg · m/s (c) Which of the two quantities calculated in parts (a) and (b) is more directly related to the net force acting on the ball during its collision with the floor? the change in the magnitude of the ball's momentum Neither are related to the net force acting on the ball. the magnitude of the change in the ball's momentum They both are equally related to the net force acting on the ball.

    mass of ball, m = 275 g = 0.275 kg

    u = - 3.10 m/s

    v = 1.90 m/s

    (a) Magnitude of change in momentum

    Δp = m (v - u)

    Δp = 0.275 (1.90 - ( - 3.10))

    Δp = 0.275 x 5 = 1.375 Ns

    (b) change in magnitude of ball momentum,

    ΔP = ║mv║ - ║mu║

    ΔP = ║0.275 x 1.90║ - ║0.275 x ( - 3.10) ║

    ΔP = 0.5225 - 0.8525

    ΔP = - 0.33 kgm/s

    (c) According to the newton's second law the rate of change of momentum is the force. So, the magnitude of rate of change of momentum is the force so part A is correct.
