The index of refraction of silicate flint glass for red light is 1.620 and for violet light is 1.660. A beam of white light in this glass strikes the glass-air interface at a 22.50° angle of incidence and refracts out into air. What is the angular separation between the red and violet components of the spectrum that emerges from the glass?4

    refractive index for violet light = 1.66

    angle of incidence, i = 22.5 degree

    Use Snell's law for the red light

    refractive index for red light = Sin i / Sin r

    Where r be the angle of refraction for red light

    1.62 = Sin 22.5 / Sin r

    Sin r = 0.2362

    r = 13.66 degree

    Use Snell's law for the violet light

    refractive index for violet light = Sin i / Sin r'

    Where r' be the angle of refraction for violet light

    1.66 = Sin 22.5 / Sin r'

    Sin r' = 0.23053

    r' = 13.33 degree

    Angular separation between red and violet components = r - r'

    = 13.66 - 13.33 = 0.33 degree
