In a double-slit experiment, the third-order maximum for light of wavelength 520 nm is located 10 mm from the central bright spot on a screen 1.6 m from the slits. Light of wavelength 660 nm is then projected through the same slits. How far from the central bright spot will the second-order maximum of this light be located? Express your answer in meters using two significant figures.

    The distance of n the bright fringe is given by the formula

    x = nλD/d

    here x = 10 x 10⁻³ m

    λ = 520 x 10⁻⁹

    n = 3

    D = 1.6 m

    d = 2.496 x 10⁻⁴ m

    for second case,

    n = 2, λ = 660 x 10⁻⁹, D = 1.6 d = 2.496 x 10⁻⁴

    x = 2 x 660 x 10⁻⁹ x 1.6 / 2.496 x 10⁻⁴m = 8.46 mm.
