An animal that eats other animals for his own survival is known as a predator. On the other hand, a prey is an animal that is sought and eaten by a predator.

Basically, prey is killed by the predator. A predator is not necessarily an animal as it can be a human being who has hunted and killed an animal.

For example, a man hunted a deer and cooks it near the forest to spend a good evening.

So, here man is the predator and deer is the prey.

Hence, when there is increase in the number of predators in the environment then there will be decrease in the number of prey organisms.

What would happen is that once the predators increase and start making the number of prey decrease, in the end there is not gonna be food because they have eaten it all. Then, the predators would start to die off due to the fault of prey for them to eat. Afterwards, the prey organisms are going to increase in number due to this and then the cycle begins again.
