The inner ear has hair-like nerve cells that differ in length by tiny amounts and have different degrees of resistance to the fluid that passes over them in the cochlea. Each hair cell has a natural sensitivity to a particular frequency. What do you think is the relationship between the length of the hair cell and the frequency of the sound it detects?
