A 1.5 g iron nail is heated to 95.0 °c and placed into a beaker of water. calculate the heat gained by the water if the final equilibrium temperature is 57.8 °

    Heat gained by water = 25.1 J

    Explanation:

    As per the law of conservation of energy

    Heat gained by water = Heat lost by the nail

    Heat lost by nail = Q = m c ΔT

    m = mass of nail = 1.5 g

    c = specific heat capacity of nail=0.449 j / g °C

    ΔT = change in temperature=57.8-95 = - 37.2° C

    Q=1.5 (0.449) (-37.2)

    Q=-25.1 J

    This is negative because the heat is lost by the nail. Same amount of heat is gained by the water.

    so heat gained by water=25.1 J
