A morsel of food with a mass of 3.8 g is injected into the esophagus with an initial speed of 2.2 cm/s. On the way down to the stomach, the walls of the esophagus exert an upward resistive force of 2.7 ✕ 10-3 N on the morsel. If the esophagus is 19.4 cm long, with what speed does the morsel of food enter the stomach?

    mass m = 3.8 g

    = 3.8 x 10⁻³ kg

    force = 2.7 x 10⁻³N

    acceleration = - 2.7 x 10⁻³ / (3.8 x 10⁻³)

    a = -.7105 m / s²

    = 71.05 cm/s²

    v² = u² - 2 a s

    = 2.2² - 2 x 71.05 x 19.4

    = 4.84 - 2756.74

    = - 2751.9

    = - 2752 cm / s

    Since it is negative that means, resistive force will not allow it to enter esophagus. It will be going in upward direction.
