Forgetting, also known as retrieval failure, does not only take place in short-term memory. Forgetting something in short-term memory is when memories leave a trace in the human brain. A trace, also known as a engram is hypothetical, and means memory traces are stored as physical as well as biochemical changes inside the brain and neural tissue in response to external stimuli.
