Electromagnetic ionizing radiation emitted from the nucleus of an atom when it de-excites. Gamma rays are best thought of as "photons," i. e., packets of pure energy. The energy of a gamma ray is usually between 50 and 2000 keV (0.05 to 2 MeV). Gamma rays can be emitted during radioactive decay.
