Near the surface of the earth what is the magnitude and direction of the acceleration due to gravity?

    On the surface of the Earth, the acceleration due to gravity is

    9.8 meters/sec² (rounded)

    toward the center of the Earth.

    Wherever we are, since that's the direction in which things fall when they're

    dropped, we call the direction toward the center of the Earth by the name "down",

    although it's a different direction in every place.
