A power plant is an industrial location or facility that is used to generate and distribute electrical power.

There are several types of power plants but all work in basically the same way. Each one has a turbine/s connected to an alternator rotor. The turbine turns and rotates this rotor which results in generation of electrical power.

Different types of power plants use different ways to turn the turbines and are classified depending on the type of fuel used.

Thermal power plants use steam at high pressure to turn the turbines. The steam is produced by heating water using coal (Coal power plants) and nuclear fission (Nuclear power plants).

Hydro-electric power plants on the other hand use the energy of falling water to turn the turbines to generate electricity.
