It can occur when light travels through transparent solids and liquids, but is most prominently seen in gases.

Whenever light travels in a medium except vacuum the molecules in the medium scatter the different wavelengths of light to different extent.
Moreover, the intensity of the scattered light is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the wavelength. I = 1 / w^4
