Wave generators are costly to install in seas and oceans and its difficult maintaining as saltwater is a hostile environment for devices, also the wavelength of the waves in the ocean is unpredictable and may damage the wave generator. As consistency of high power waves is not guaranteed and the wave behaviour can be unreliable, this leads to the wave generator being inefficient. Also, the performance drops significantly during rough weather.
