The greatest ocean depths on the earth are found in the marianas trench near the philippines, where the depth of the bottom of the trench is about 11.0 km. calculate the pressure due to the ocean at a depth of 9.5 km, assuming sea water density is constant all the way down. (the validity of the assumption of constant density is examined in one of the integrated concept problems.)

    Let us assume that the density of seawater is similar to ordinary water that is:

    density ρ = 1000 kg / m^3

    Then we can calculate the hydraulic pressure using the formula:

    P = ρ g h

    P = (1000 kg / m^3) * 9.81 m/s^2 * 9,500 m

    P = 93,195,000 Pascal
