Sound is a longitudinal wave, because the vibration of the molelecules occurs in the same direction of propagation of the wave.

In fact, a sound wave consists of alternating regions of air compression and rarefaction, and these regions "oscillate" in the same direction of propagation of the wave, so this is a longitudinal wave.
