27. Suppose two stars are located in region A of the H-R diagram shown in the figure below. Star X appears much dimmer than star Y as see from Earth. Which star can be inferred to be nearer to Earth, and how do you know?

    We can infer that star Y is closer but other factors must be considered including the heat of the star, the mass, and the brightness of the star. Even though star X seems dimmer it may just be less bright or contain less heat.
